Some law students are working students and take evening classes. Some law students have to juggle taking care of their family and studying. Some law students outside Metro Manila have to work extra hard, pay extra bills, and travel to take the bar exams in Manila (before the bar exams were regionalized).

I’m not saying I fall under any or all of the above. I have my personal reasons why I wasn’t able to pass the bar on the first try. Maybe I was unlucky. Maybe I didn’t study enough. Maybe I had problems.

But at the end of the day, I passed the bar eventually. At the end of the day, I became a lawyer and I am still a lawyer.

A lawyer who did not go to make money in a law firm but a lawyer who worked in the Public Attorney’s Office.

A lawyer who did not defend big corporations but a lawyer who worked in an alternative lawyering non-governmental organization called SALIGAN that defended the Sumilao farmers and won them back their land from San Miguel Corporation. Ads.
A lawyer that did not profit privately but a lawyer that was rendering public service from the start.

So to all aspiring lawyers who have taken or will take the bar more than once, do not be disheartened by those who will discriminate or look down upon you.

There is no shame in trying again to reach for your dreams. There is no shame in taking the bar exams more than once. There is only shame for those who would shame us.

And I’m not running against Sara Duterte. She is a pañera I respect for having gone through the same difficulty and hardships of being a lawyer. But the only lawyer running for President is a woman.

The best man for the job is a woman. Because I work hard and I work for the people.
